Natural family planning (NFP) is a method of pregnancy planning in which an intercourse is avoided to prevent not planned pregnancy during the fertile, and which relies on observation of signs of the fertility and infertility phase in the female menstrual cycle. Many people have become convinced that the NFP methods are ineffective. It turns out, however, that the sympto-thermal method is more effective than causing many side effects widely used and readily available contraceptive hormonal pills. The NFP is 99.8% effective in comparison to 99.7% effectiveness of the contraceptive hormonal pills. One of the most well-known and most frequently used method of natural family planning is Josef Rötzer's sympto-thermal method. NFP method is also a chance for pregnancy for couples who have problem with conceiving. Research indicates the need for greater involvement of midwives in NFP methods teaching. Midwives should teach and promote NFP methods in clinics for women, medical centres, patronage visits, hospitals and obstetrics and gynaecology wards. Midwives must thoroughly familiarize themselves with all applicable rules, methods of recording the observations and all deviations and irregularities. Midwife's ignorance increases the incapacity of the NPR method. The development of new technologies has led to the creation of range of devices that support usage of natural family planning methods. Increasingly, the temperature measurement and recording takes place automatically, releasing women from this obligation. Every midwife, even one who does not support the NFP, should be able to teach natural family planning methods, know their types and rules and how they can be used as a contraceptive.
