Analysis of the cost of medication and possible side effects in the population of young people suffering from hypertension

Introduction. Hypertension is a serious health economic and social problem in the world. By analyzing the costs of this disease entity it is possible to rationally manage a budget, health care and make more conscious financial decisions. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost of medication and the occurrence of adverse effects of drugs used in the treatment of hypertension in young people. Material. 29 patients aged 15–31 years with diagnosed and treated hypertension were included into a retrospective study from a societal perspective. Methods. Analyses were subjected to the cost of medication and any adverse events among patients with hypertension in the time horizon of one year – 2011. The necessary data to economic evaluation was obtained from patient medical history card and billing department and hospital organizations. Results. The total annual cost of medication and possible side effects of hypertension among the analyzed group of patients was estimated at 8118.96 zł, which per patient was 279.96 ± 223.97 zł. The cost of adverse events was estimated at 14,47zł, which represents 0.18% of the total cost of antihypertensive therapy. Conclusions. A small percentage of young patients with hypertension suffered adverse effects during antihypertensive pharmacotherapy. The costs associated with adverse reactions accounted for only 0.18% of the total costs associated with pharmacological treatment and the occurrence of any adverse effects.
