Introduction. Perimenopause is a time when in addition to typical somatic symptoms resulting from estrogen deficiency women experience equally severe emotional problems. All these symptoms may significantly impair the quality of life for women during this period. Aim. Assessment of selected biopsychosocial parameters of women’s condition during perimenopausal period. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 300 female residents of the Tarnów District, aged 45-55, randomly recruited. The method was standardized questionnaire of Kuperman Index. The analysis used chi-square test and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results. On average the subjects were 50.57 years old, and the mean age of the first menstruation was 13.82 years. Menopause related problems were reported by 68% of the subjects, including 45% of all the respondents experiencing a spectrum of severe symptoms. The older the subject the more frequent menopause related problems such as insomnia, mood swings and night sweats. Such problems negatively impact the subjects’ quality of life at all levels. The subjects’ marital status has been shown to correlate with the support obtained by the women experiencing menopause related symptoms. Conclusions. Due to the frequent incidence of severe menopause symptoms it is necessary to educate women in detail about methods of reducing such problems. Women should look for specialist support after they experience the first symptoms of menopause, and medical personnel should intensify information campaigns designed to improve health of middle aged women. It is postulated that educational campaigns designed for women should not only focus on therapeutic aspects but also on enhancing the quality of their lives.
